Fashion Photography
There is more to fashion photography is more than taking photographs of clothing on a model. It can be elaborate, conceptual, thematic all with the purpose of portraying an idea or a lifestyle to the consumer. For your next assignment you will be choosing a brand that you want to create a stylized shoot for. You need to plan the concept, seek out a model, props, outfits and location.
You will create a series of 6-8 photographs that convey a concept, emotion, idea to sell the lifestyle of the brand. Your images should be varied in angle, perspective to give them a rhythm as the viewer sees them. The approach that you take will greatly depend on your brand. If you are wanting to create a more conceptual piece think about clashing different genres, colours, concepts, locations. If you are wanting to evoke a feeling with more subtlety play with your colours, textures, and emotionality of your photos. In my opinion there are a lot of problems that exist within the fashion industry: ageism, sizeism, homophobia. There is a movement to be inclusive and create images that reflect what our society actually looks like. What will you contribute to the movement? http://www.horstdiekgerdes.com/ http://www.sebastiankim.com/ http://www.sebastiankim.com/#/numero-gertrud-hegelund/ http://davidlachapelle.com/ Annie Lebovitz |

Simple Beauty - Due NOVEMBER 2
"All works by the German plant photographer Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1933) follow the same style: one element of a plant is separated from the rest of it, sometimes dried or rendered devoid of surrounding tissues, and always greatly (usually from ten to forty times) enlarged in a blown-up image. Sometimes the plants are marshalled together in groups of two or three as if in an architectural ornament; sometimes exhibited individually. Blossfeldt started subjecting plants to these strange manipulations in the early 1890s, when he became an assistant of Moritz Meurer, a professor at the Berlin Pedagogical Institute who initiated a study of plant forms as the source for German industrial production design." source :http://www.cca.qc.ca/en/issues/11/nature-reorganized/647/direct-from-nature

What about Karl Blossfeld’s still life photography that makes it appear timeless in nature? 4. What kind of mood/feeling do you get from Karl Blossfeld’s still life photographs and why? Brainstorm a list of possible plants, items that you could use for your project. |

A day in your life
Level 2: 8-10 photographic essay that capture the moments of your daily routine. Many of you are in grade 12 and this is your final year of high school. I can barely remember what a day of my life looked like when I was your age. Now thinking back on it I would love to have a snap shot into the little things that defined my daily existence. Everyone captures the big outings, the celebrations and milestones, but some of our most cherished memories from from the every day moments. In this project you will capture the rituals and routines that are easy to take for granted and often gone before we know it. The purpose of this project is to clear your photography cobwebs and reenergize your creativity. Your photos should be taken throughout your day, so you will be exploring different light qualities and colour. You will create a collection of photographs that tell a powerful story. To create an interesting collection of photographs use all the tools you have on hand as a photographer. Create a variety of photos that allow your viewer to see your world through your eyes. Remember to think about varying your angles (bird's eye, worm's eye), using texture, filling the frame, rule of thirds, the details and the big picture. |
Step 1: brainstorm a list of things from your life that are important to you and form your daily habits and rituals. Think of things that you would like to remember (or not so much) like the soggy cereal that you can never finish, or the way your parent looks when he/she asks you to help unload the dishwasher.
Step 2: Research "lifestyle documentary photography" and find a photographer who inspires you. Select 5 of their images and describe what about their work is amazing and how it could connect to your project. Post your research and brainstorming to the research and brainstorming section of your website.
Step 3: shoot and edit your photos! Project is due: OCT 7
